Top Do’s and Don’ts as a tourist in NYC

“The city that never sleeps” is one of New York’s well known nicknames – and rightfully so! The constant hustle and bustle, the continuous march of people parading through the streets, the monotonous noise of ongoing traffic and subways passing! So how does one survive this city as a first time visitor?

Here are some of our top do’s and don’ts as a tourist roaming the streets of the big NYC!

1. Plan you activities ahead of each day
There is so much to see and do in New York – most which entails travelling from A to B. Whether you plan on using the subway system or travelling on foot, you can accomplish so much more with a plan in place.

2. Don’t be an obvious tourist!

  • Use google maps rather than a city map,
  • Make sure to dress comfortably, but don’t wear branded “I LOVE NYC” souvenirs
  • Walk at a moderate speed in line with everyone else in the city who are most likely in a rush to be somewhere.
  • Don’t stop in the middle of a crowded sidewalk to text or use your smart phone – step to the side first

3. Enjoy the food – there are so many choices!

You are on your holidays which means two things;

  • Firstly don’t stick to what you know and opt for a chain restaurant –  you need to branch out to some of New York’s top restaurants and experience NYC cuisine!
  • Secondly, treat yourself! New York is known for their delicious burgers, their mouth-watering pizza slices, and let’s not get started on their heavenly desserts. The food will complete your ultimate New York experience, so choose wisely!

4. Buy a MetroCard

MetroCard’s are cheap and cheerful for anybody travelling around the Big Apple. If you can avoid getting a taxi, do! Taxis are expensive and will more than likely take twice the time to travel as a subway would! Don’t forget to take advantage of the NY subway systems for those longer journeys that you can’t manage on foot!

5. Don’t forget to purchase a City Pass!

If you plan on visiting some of New York’s main attractions, it might be worth investing in a city pass which could save you up to 42% on entry fees, giving you the opportunity to see more, for less!

Top 5 Outdoor Activities for Exploring New York City

Top 5 Outdoor Activities for Exploring New York City

When heading to New York City the best way to explore the Big Apple is to take a bite out of it. What does this mean? It means leaving your hotel for a bit and exploring all that the city has to offer. If you’re fortunate enough to venture into the city during these warm, exhilarating summer days then try getting out of the museums and seeing the great New York outdoors. Here are some of our favorite things to do in the city when the weather is pretty.

1. Take a Stroll along the High Line

The High Line is a grand example of New York ingenuity. Formerly an abandoned freight rail line elevated above Manhattan’s West Side, the High Line is now one of NYC’s most popular parks offering scenic views that no other green space can provide. Now is the perfect time to visit as the flowers are in full bloom. Plan ahead to attend one of their garden tours or to see a concert overlooking Manhattan’s busy streets. Afterwards, visit Chelsea Market, an indoor marketplace renowned for its wide variety of eateries and shops.

2. Indulge at Smorgasburg

Nowadays, a trip to NYC isn’t complete without a trip over to Brooklyn and the best reason to make the trek is Smorgasburg. Established in 2011, this weekly open-air food court has become the largest in America. Each weekend visitors can sample food from more than 100 local vendors. Head over to Williamsburg on Saturdays and Prospect Park on Sundays for what the New York Times calls “the Woodstock of eating.”

3. Go Bouldering in Central Park

If you’re looking for something more extreme than this is for you. Bouldering enthusiasts have been heading to Central Park for decades to climb the park’s historic rocks. Popular spots include Cat Rock and Rat Rock. For beginners, head to Rat Rock which is known for local expert climbers providing advice and tips.

4. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

This trip is probably best after spending the afternoon at Smorgasburg. Even if you aren’t looking to burn off a delicious meal, the views justify making the trip alone. Now over 125 years old, this iconic structure provides great views of the East River and the Manhattan Skyline just remember to snap a few pics.

5. Enjoy a Pint on the Patio

After exploring the city, head back to the Fitzpatrick Hotel to enjoy a drink (or two) on the Patio. It’s the best way to cool down and relax after a long day out. And if a pint isn’t your thing we have a variety of delicious colorful cocktails for you to enjoy. The Fitzpatrick Hotel provides the perfect opening to explore the city and our comfortable rooms are the greatest way to prepare for another day of sightseeing.

The Met Heavenly Bodies Exhibit running through Oct. 8

For anyone enamored by this year’s Met Gala theme, it’s necessary to see the inspiration behind some of this year’s most stunning looks. Fashion has long taken style cues from the Catholic Church’s propensity for ritual drama and flair. The cornerstone of this show are papal robes and accessories from the Sistine Chapel. Many of these pieces have never been displayed before so this might be your only chance to see them in person.

Free Walking Tours in the Garment District running through Dec. 30

Fashion is art and this tour gives you an insider perspective. Every show is unique and you might visit a private showroom or a sample sale, all while learning about this historic neighborhood’s background.

Sports: Knicks. Yankees. Giants. These teams are the heart and soul of the city but we suggest taking in some fresh events that won’t disappointment.

Brooklyn Cyclones running through Sept. 3

Come see where the big stars get their start. The Brooklyn Cyclones play in Coney Island and provide the chance to hit the beach and the pier before the game. This team is known for their odd promotional days with upcoming events including a Star Wars jersey giveaway, Harry Potter night, and a tribute to the Office. Make sure to visit for an experience that can’t be provided at CitiField.

U.S. Open running from Aug. 21- Sept. 9

This event only happens once a year so if you’re in the city during this tournament, it’s where you want to be. The U.S. Open is the only Grand Slam in the country and the only time to see the biggest stars in tennis. Will Serena Williams win another Grand Slam? Who will be victorious between Nadal and Federer? The answers to these questions await at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

New York City Football Club running through Oct. 28

If you’re a fan of sports, a trip to the city should include a visit to Yankee Stadium but we don’t suggest watching a ball game. The New York City Football Club is the city’s newest club and Yankee Stadium has become their temporary home creating a unique experience to watch a soccer game. Join the Third Rail, their local fan club, to cheer the team on in a thrilling match.

The Best Events to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr Day in NYC

All over America there are fantastic events to celebrate the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day and here in New York City it is no different. Throughout his life Dr. Martin Luther King Jr dedicated himself to civil rights, non violent opposition and community service. Since January 1986 when it became a nationwide holiday the people of New York City have commemorated his life by holding events and carrying out volunteer work all over NYC. If you’re visiting one of the Fitzpatrick Hotels in New York in January be sure to get involved and remember legendary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr at some of these events.

One of the great things about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day in New York is that there are fun and educational events for all the family. Now in it’s 29th year, the 2017 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March by Manhattan Country School eight – graders is a lovely example of events for all ages. The kids take to the streets of Manhattan and march to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The march is a inspiring demonstration of speaking out for civil rights with young kids giving speeches along the way and a perfect way to show our children what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr stood for. This year the theme is “ We Will Not Be Silenced: A Call To Action” starting at 10am at Riverside Church and finishing at Manhattan Country School at 1pm with stops and speeches along the way.

A little further afield but definitely worth the trip is the Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr presented by the Brooklyn Academy of Music. For it’s 31st year BAM welcomes Opal Tometi, a racial and immigrants rights activist to the Peter Jay Sharp Building to give his keynote speech at 10.30am. Tickets for the speech will be available from 8am in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House lobby. If you don’t make it for the speech that’s ok as the day is only beginning. As New York City’s largest celebration in honor of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, BAM offers many more world – renowned activists, poets, musicians and performers to make the day really special. Institutional Radio Choir and Sacred Steel band the Campbell Brothers are two that should not be missed. BAM is easily accessed by subway from either Fitzpatricks Manhattan or Fitzpatricks Grand Central so just ask us and we will be glad to point you in the right direction.

These are just two of the biggest events happening in New York City on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day to honour the great man but there are plenty more happening around NYC, so if you’re staying at a Fitzpatrick hotel or just dropping in, please ask and we will help you find the event that suits you.

It’s National Pizza Day

For a city that is so far from Italy, New York City has a lot of really good pizza restaurants. That’s because New Yorkers love pizza and at Fitzpatrick Hotels New York it is no different, we really love pizza. So it is no surprise that we look forward to National Pizza Day every year and this year we thought we would share our favourite pizza restaurants in New York City with our guests. Now you will have no excuse not to celebrate this great day with some of the best pizza NYC has to offer.

Up first we have Joe’s Pizza in Greenwich Village. Joe’s has been open since 1975 and has been delivering us with great New York Style pizza since. Always made fresh means that the slices are mouthwateringly hot with Joe’s own pizza sauce and fresh mozzarella cheese. Available to sit in but I wouldn’t get your hopes up, Joe’s is small and because of the quality, always has a lot of business. Joe’s would be perfect for anyone staying in the Fitzpatrick Hotel Grand Central and wanted to head out to grab a quick slice or two on the go.

Next up is Kesté Pizza & Vino, another fabulous pizza establishment in West Village. Kesté Pizza & Vino was established in 2009 by Roberto Caporuscio. Born and raised outside Naples, Italy, Roberto knows a lot about Italian pizza and more importantly, he knows a lot about making Italian pizza. Kresté offer Neapolitan pizza with a wide range of toppings cooked in a wood fired oven to give them a real authentic Italian finish. Reasonably priced and not to far from Fitzpatrick Hotel Grand Central, Kresté Pizza and Vino is one of the staffs favourite in Fitzpatrick Hotels NYC.

Located in Brooklyn, Roberta’s is a little bit further afield from our Manhattan Hotels and even with the queues that can sometimes last hours rather than minutes, we still had to include it. Labelled on Google Map’s as “Hipster Italian dining plus takeout”, Roberta’s is certainly different with graffiti on the walls and picnic tables but the reason Roberta’s gets on our list is how good the pizza is. With really creative toppings, Roberta’s never fails to satisfy that pizza craving. We definitely recommend making the the trip and sticking out the queue.

How could we finish our list of best pizza places in New York City without mentioning the first pizzeria in the United States. Located in the Little Italy area of Manhattan, Lombardi’s New York City was founded in 1905 and the pizza is still great. With great pizza and good atmosphere, Lombardi’s is a good one if you are visiting New York as a family.

So there you are, no excuses to not embrace National Pizza Day and get stuck into some of the best pizza New York City has to offer. As always, just ask us in one of our Fitzpatrick Hotels NYC if you need any assistance or if you need to wash down all that pizza with a drink we would love to have you. Enjoy.

The Waldorf Astoria Closes its Doors

The hotel business is VERY competitive. Those serious about it approach hospitality with a level of commitment that is almost like a religious calling. Here at Fitzpatrick Hotels, our mission is to exceed the expectations of our guests by providing personal attention and unparalleled service that inspires them to return again, and again. We live this mission every day.

We don’t often offer praise to our competition – the type of professional passion we are talking about just does not allow for it. But something significant happened last week that warrants an exception to this rule. On March 1st, when their last guest checked out at 12pm, the great Waldorf Astoria shut its doors and closed.

Located at almost the midway point between our two hotels on Lexington Avenue, ours were two of the closest hotels to the Waldorf Astoria. However, it was not just another competitor.

The Waldorf really put the hospitality industry on the map here in the United States. The original Waldorf opened in 1893, and it moved to its current location 86 years ago, in 1931. It was the tallest hotel in world at the time, and remained so for almost 35 years. It made a splash quickly, and became the “Mecca” for lavish hospitality and opulence, in its rooms, in its restaurants and in its function spaces. The largest of these functions spaces is its Grand Ballroom, which has ceilings almost 50 feet high, and can seat 1,500 people for dinner.

The Waldorf was an innovator in so many ways. They invented room service, which other hotels quickly copied. Then, they invented 24-hour room service, which wasn’t as easy to copy. Talk about progressive? In 1931, they were the first hotel to hire women as chefs, long before Julia Child came along to make it fashionable. Many food and beverage favorites were invented there – the Rob Roy cocktail, Red Velvet Cake, Eggs Benedict, the Martini (yes…THE Martini), and of course, the Waldorf Salad.

The Waldorf was the first hotel in the U.S. to become a “celebrity haunt” – a place where people went specifically to be seen. The list of famous guests is endless, but notables included Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland, John Wayne, Muhammad Ali and the Dalai Lama.

Some celebrities even used the hotel as their residence for long periods of time. This list includes Marilyn Monroe, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Frank Sinatra, who lived in “The Cole Porter Suite” and hung out in Sir Harry’s Bar, right of the lobby.

Every President of the United States going all the way back to Herbert Hoover has stayed at the Waldorf while in New York. It might have been the only hotel in the world where the term “Presidential Suite” was completely literal. Although, we come close at Fitzpatrick Manhattan, where every Irish President stayed since opening in 1991.

All of this buzz very firmly established the Waldorf as the yardstick by which other hotels were measured. This pushed other hotels to elevate their product and service, and by extension reshaped the hospitality industry into a bona fide professional field here in the United States. For that, we say “Thank you, Waldorf Astoria”.

Like many institutions, the Waldorf had aged a bit in more recent years, and while she may not have had quite the same luster that she used too, the Waldorf still had a certain mystique that was completely its own.

I’m sure many other hoteliers around the world – especially those here in New York – also felt a pang of remorse at the closing of the iconic Waldorf’s doors. We would like to take this opportunity to raise a glass to the Waldorf and thank the iconic hotel for raising the bar in hotel hospitality, giving us all something to aspire to.

We at Fitzpatrick’s realize that many regular guests of the Waldorf might need to find a new hotel near the Waldorf when in New York. We would love to welcome you, please mention this tribute to our reservations team, or use the promotional code WALD10 on our website, and we would be delighted to offer you a 10% discount of off our Best Available Rate. Please click here for Fitzpatrick Manhattan and here for Fitzpatrick Grand Central.
