Summer in New York!

Whether it’s the yellow cabs, the neon rush of Time Square, or simply the familiar wood panelling of the iconic Fitzpatrick’s hotel- there is no doubt that New York City is a delicious blur of excitement that is perfect for families to explore – especially in summer.

From bird-watching in Central Park to frequent open-air movies, ice-skating rinks and street performers around every corner – it is easy to find activities that will be hugely memorable without breaking the bank of mum and dad. With that in mind, we have put together some of the best things for families to experience in the Big Apple.

1. Family HQ

It is a good idea to establish a base that’s close to all the attractions that you will be…well, attracted to! Remember too, that a big part of your holiday vibe will be your surroundings. That’s why Fitzpatrick’s Manhattan Hotel is well-suited to family explorations of all kinds. It has all the best aspects of an Irish country hotel with the typical New York charm you are after. It is also just a 10-minute walk to Central Park which is a must-see for parents as well as children. The hotel’s in-house restaurant, The Fitz is also perfect for peckish tummies after a days exploration and handy too as it’s open 7 am until 11.30pm daily. It helps that it’s known as one of the friendliest places in the city, and family suites – a rare luxury in NYC- are also available.

2. The Children’s Museum

Learning while having fun…sneaky! The little ones will love this cultural playspace with its science show, story time and treasure hunts. There is even a dancing area where your budding ballerinas and rapping rascals can choreograph their own show. It is only a short hop from Fitzpatrick’s Grand Central hotel as well as Central Park. What’s not to love?

3. American Girl Store

Your little dolls will adore this shop of dreams with two floors in the Rockefeller centre dedicated to this now world-famous plastic doll. From matching outfits to stylish accessories, it is easy to get caught up in the magic of it all. There is also an American Girl doll salon which, wait for it, is open for kids too. Just don’t forget your wallet!

4. Eat out at Chelsea Market

Come hungry! This bustling food hall and artisan market has over 40 of New York’s best-loved street food stalls. The children will love the sticky buns at the Fat Witch Bakery and they can even make a wish at the water fountain at the centre.

5. Ferry nice

There is something really special about viewing the Statue of Liberty up close. Taking the 25-minute ferry boat towards Ellis island is definitely worth doing and best of all, it’s free. If you want the most breathtaking backdrop for your family photos, look no further.

6. Mini-fun

Ever wanted to see some of the world’s famous landmarks in miniature form? It may not be your typical tourist attraction but Gulliver’s Gate on West 44th Street is a huge hit. It features more than 300 scenes globally and the level of detail is truly mesmerizing.

7. Central Park

Need some wide open space after a few hours window shopping? This so-called ‘green getaway’ is perfect for a visit. There are playgrounds galore, a carousel and petting zoo. Stop for lunch at the Boathouse for some of the best sandwiches in town or simply people watch as the children chase pigeons. Either way, just a ten-minute walk from Fitzpatrick’s Manhattan hotel, this is one of the unmissable attractions of your family break.

8. The High life

The high line is an elevated rail track (no longer used for transport) that has been turned into a wild garden track that city-dwellers use as well as those visiting the city. Families will appreciate the unique views as well as some of the uber-hip food trucks dotted along the track. The High Line is well worth a visit.

9. Cool it

Did somebody say waffle cone? One of the benefits of New York’s often muggy heat is the amount of ice-cream you will have to consume. One of the best places to cool down is Brooklyn Farmacy in Carroll Gardens in the Borough. It’s old-school soda fountains are what draw the crowds. Expect soft creamy ice-cream smothered in whipped cream and sticky sauce and of course, it is topped with a cherry. Pretty please…

10. And finally…

Discovering New York as a family is something really special. As long as you have researched ahead and made great use of Fitzpatrick’s extremely dedicated concierge, you will know exactly the best way to see this city in your limited time. Do try to plan the attractions you want to see according to location and group them so you get the most out of your day. Don’t bring a buggy if you can help it as it is very hard to navigate the busy streets. Do use Eighth Avenue as Broadway and Seventh Avenue can get very crowded in summer months. NYC is an amazingly vibrant playground for both adults and children – we hope you enjoy absorbing all the Big Apple has to offer for you and your family.

Top Do’s and Don’ts as a tourist in NYC

“The city that never sleeps” is one of New York’s well known nicknames – and rightfully so! The constant hustle and bustle, the continuous march of people parading through the streets, the monotonous noise of ongoing traffic and subways passing! So how does one survive this city as a first time visitor?

Here are some of our top do’s and don’ts as a tourist roaming the streets of the big NYC!

1. Plan you activities ahead of each day
There is so much to see and do in New York – most which entails travelling from A to B. Whether you plan on using the subway system or travelling on foot, you can accomplish so much more with a plan in place.

2. Don’t be an obvious tourist!

  • Use google maps rather than a city map,
  • Make sure to dress comfortably, but don’t wear branded “I LOVE NYC” souvenirs
  • Walk at a moderate speed in line with everyone else in the city who are most likely in a rush to be somewhere.
  • Don’t stop in the middle of a crowded sidewalk to text or use your smart phone – step to the side first

3. Enjoy the food – there are so many choices!

You are on your holidays which means two things;

  • Firstly don’t stick to what you know and opt for a chain restaurant –  you need to branch out to some of New York’s top restaurants and experience NYC cuisine!
  • Secondly, treat yourself! New York is known for their delicious burgers, their mouth-watering pizza slices, and let’s not get started on their heavenly desserts. The food will complete your ultimate New York experience, so choose wisely!

4. Buy a MetroCard

MetroCard’s are cheap and cheerful for anybody travelling around the Big Apple. If you can avoid getting a taxi, do! Taxis are expensive and will more than likely take twice the time to travel as a subway would! Don’t forget to take advantage of the NY subway systems for those longer journeys that you can’t manage on foot!

5. Don’t forget to purchase a City Pass!

If you plan on visiting some of New York’s main attractions, it might be worth investing in a city pass which could save you up to 42% on entry fees, giving you the opportunity to see more, for less!

Top 5 Outdoor Activities for Exploring New York City

Top 5 Outdoor Activities for Exploring New York City

When heading to New York City the best way to explore the Big Apple is to take a bite out of it. What does this mean? It means leaving your hotel for a bit and exploring all that the city has to offer. If you’re fortunate enough to venture into the city during these warm, exhilarating summer days then try getting out of the museums and seeing the great New York outdoors. Here are some of our favorite things to do in the city when the weather is pretty.

1. Take a Stroll along the High Line

The High Line is a grand example of New York ingenuity. Formerly an abandoned freight rail line elevated above Manhattan’s West Side, the High Line is now one of NYC’s most popular parks offering scenic views that no other green space can provide. Now is the perfect time to visit as the flowers are in full bloom. Plan ahead to attend one of their garden tours or to see a concert overlooking Manhattan’s busy streets. Afterwards, visit Chelsea Market, an indoor marketplace renowned for its wide variety of eateries and shops.

2. Indulge at Smorgasburg

Nowadays, a trip to NYC isn’t complete without a trip over to Brooklyn and the best reason to make the trek is Smorgasburg. Established in 2011, this weekly open-air food court has become the largest in America. Each weekend visitors can sample food from more than 100 local vendors. Head over to Williamsburg on Saturdays and Prospect Park on Sundays for what the New York Times calls “the Woodstock of eating.”

3. Go Bouldering in Central Park

If you’re looking for something more extreme than this is for you. Bouldering enthusiasts have been heading to Central Park for decades to climb the park’s historic rocks. Popular spots include Cat Rock and Rat Rock. For beginners, head to Rat Rock which is known for local expert climbers providing advice and tips.

4. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge

This trip is probably best after spending the afternoon at Smorgasburg. Even if you aren’t looking to burn off a delicious meal, the views justify making the trip alone. Now over 125 years old, this iconic structure provides great views of the East River and the Manhattan Skyline just remember to snap a few pics.

5. Enjoy a Pint on the Patio

After exploring the city, head back to the Fitzpatrick Hotel to enjoy a drink (or two) on the Patio. It’s the best way to cool down and relax after a long day out. And if a pint isn’t your thing we have a variety of delicious colorful cocktails for you to enjoy. The Fitzpatrick Hotel provides the perfect opening to explore the city and our comfortable rooms are the greatest way to prepare for another day of sightseeing.

The Met Heavenly Bodies Exhibit running through Oct. 8

For anyone enamored by this year’s Met Gala theme, it’s necessary to see the inspiration behind some of this year’s most stunning looks. Fashion has long taken style cues from the Catholic Church’s propensity for ritual drama and flair. The cornerstone of this show are papal robes and accessories from the Sistine Chapel. Many of these pieces have never been displayed before so this might be your only chance to see them in person.

Fashion is art and this tour gives you an insider perspective. Every show is unique and you might visit a private showroom or a sample sale, all while learning about this historic neighborhood’s background.

This event only happens once a year so if you’re in the city during this tournament, it’s where you want to be. The U.S. Open is the only Grand Slam in the country and the only time to see the biggest stars in tennis. Will Serena Williams win another Grand Slam? Who will be victorious between Nadal and Federer? The answers to these questions await at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

New York City Football Club running through Oct. 28

If you’re a fan of sports, a trip to the city should include a visit to Yankee Stadium but we don’t suggest watching a ball game. The New York City Football Club is the city’s newest club and Yankee Stadium has become their temporary home creating a unique experience to watch a soccer game. Join the Third Rail, their local fan club, to cheer the team on in a thrilling match.

Entertainment

The title movies with a view isn’t an understatement. Take in gorgeous views of Lower Manhattan’s famed skyline while watching a diverse line-up of movies in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Next up is last year’s blockbuster, Wonder Woman, which is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

The lineup was crafted to inspire young and old generations of jazz fans so this means that there is something for everyone to enjoy and new acts for fans to discover.
