The city transforms into a sparkling winter wonderland and is filled to the brim with festive markets, iconic ice-skating rinks and dazzling lights. We’ve put together this guide for you to be able to experience all of NYC’s winter magic all from the comfort of our warm and hospitable hotels.
Christmas Markets in New York
New York over Christmas a variety of festive markets perfect for picking up gifts, seasonal treats, and handmade treasures:
- Bryant Park Winter Village – This is particularly good for those staying in our Grand Central location. There are dozens of boutique stalls, cosy hot chocolate spots, and a full-sized ice rink, which is FREE to use (note, there is a fee for renting of skates).
- Union Square Holiday Market – The Union Square Holiday Market is a holiday market with over 150 unique vendors selling arts, crafts, home accessories and food. Perfect for a pre-dinner stroll.
- Columbus Circle Holiday Market – This holiday market open for all of December, located in Central Park, has over 100 artisans and designers selling unique wares, like special foods, jewellery, art, home goods, and much more.
Ice Skating in Iconic Spots
Nothing says NYC winter like gliding across a frozen rink surrounded by city skyscrapers:
- Rockefeller Center – A stone’s throw from our Grand Central location (0.5 miles) and perhaps the most iconic rink in the city, with the towering famous Christmas tree and festive music, ice skating at Rockefeller centre is a must do activity with a wonderful atmosphere.
- Wollman Rink in Central Park – Ice skating in Central Park offers scenic views and a true New York skating experience away from the crowds. This is very convenient to our Manhattan location.
- Bryant Park Rink – Close to our Grand Central location and free admission bar skate rental fee, ice skating in Bryant Park is perfect for a budget-friendly winter outing.
Rockefeller Centre & Holiday Light
December marks the start of Rockefeller Centre’s annual Christmas tree lighting, which is a must-see spectacle if you are staying at this time – Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 10 PM EST. Even after the official ceremony, the tree and surrounding decorations light up the plaza daily, making it a perfect spot for holiday photos.
Elsewhere, Christmas lights in NYC include:
- Fifth Avenue Window Displays – Department stores like Saks and Bergdorf Goodman go all out with themed windows. You would have to see it to believe it!
- Dyker Heights displays, Brooklyn – If you were planning a trip to Brooklyn, Dyker Heights is a neighbourhood renowned for “over-the-top” residential holiday decorations.
Our tips!
- Arrive Early – Markets and skating rinks get crowded, especially on weekends.
- Dress in Layers – NYC can be chilly in November and December. Gloves, scarves, and hats are essential. Make sure you have layers you can take on and off!
- Have your phone on the ready – Rockefeller Centre and some of the window displays on 5th avenue are top spots for photos!
- Combine Activities – You can easily pair a market visit with skating nearby to make the most of your day. Or even a market visit for an amble pre dinner.
